I want you to free write
about some subjects you might be interested in researching this
semester. Consider some of the inquiry based questions you have
generated in class on Monday and consider your own personal interests
as well. This is pretty open and the
content is really up to you, but here are a few examples of things you
might write about:
What is a subject that fascinates you and why are you interested? Write
about what you already know about your subject and the stake holders in
the discussion you are entering into. Consider alternate ways to frame
the question to accentuate different aspects of the original idea. How might you conduct your own study? (consider how the first two
student examples pieces worked) Could a focus group work for your study?
You
might also develop a research experiment to test your inquiry based
question.
If you are having a bit of trouble coming up with your research subject, consider the
research articles that are published in in They Say I Say. The second half of the text contains several interesting subjects that you might delve into. You are not limited to these topics. You might also watch some talks on TED.com too.

ReplyDeleteThe research topic I am planning on doing is marijuana and athletes. I am going to be studying the effect of marijuana on athletes and if it restricts their performance or enhances it. Because of the recent contraversies of marijuana becoming legal in some states as well as for medicinal purposes in other states this topic is very much relevant. Athletes are being greatly effected due to this change in legalization because most of the drug test done on these athletes still test for marijuana use. Many athletes are getting penalized for using marijuana and then participating in competitions like the olympics. Athlete Micheal Phelps was almost stripped of his olympic metals from recent years after testing positively for marijuana. I want to research whether or not marijuana can negatively affect the performance of athletes or if it can actually help. Since you usually smoke marijuana it can effect your lungs but it also can help athletes deal with pain from training.
I think this topic will be a very good one for discussion since so many people have varying opinions on it. I am going to research the effect of marijuana scientifically but also look at the discussion on it and what different influential groups opinions on it are.
for my research topic i will be finding out what different types of apocalypses there are and if they can actually happen. i will start off will a basic question "Do you believe they can happen?". I will be researching all and any type of apocalypse that can remotely happen. then i will go into great detail on the apocalypse. one of my personal favorites is the zombie apocalypse. the fact that a parasite can already know how to use our brain for its own is a bit scary. And the fact that when it bites you you will turn into a mindless dummy that feels no pain and only dies from a bullet to the head. there is a lot to write about in this topic and I will look forward to writing my essay about apocalypses.
ReplyDeleteOne of the ideas I'm thinking of writing about is the effectiveness of pet therapy. From volunteering at a Pet Rescue organization and by having two dogs of my own, I know the effect pets can have on people. Therapy animals can be used for sick people,people with anxiety, the elderly etc. I want to research who else it benefits and how it works.I know when researching I could find skeptics about if it is a really proactive method or not. I think I could form a discussion for this topic with people who have or find information about an organization who helps people find a therapy pet.
ReplyDeleteFor my research paper I am interested in quite a few things about the same topic. My main point about my research paper would be what makes a murderer snap? Or what goes on through a murderers mind that makes them kill? What are their motives & how does different mental diseases affect their daily living? Can a certain family situation or even social situations affect their mental stability. Ive watched and heard many stories , either from the actual criminal or it was a documentary about the crime a criminal committed. I can say that almost every murderer had a horrible upbringing as a child or had gotten bullied through out his/her life time. other than criminals having a mental illness, majority of the criminals are perfectly normal and when they do snap, they act upon anger issues or feel the need to have revenge on whomever caused them the most pain throughout their life. I am going to go about this research with finding true articles, typically one that either the criminal wrote theirselves or documentaries that are helpful and are based upon facts. Maybe even go to the psychology side of this and see what a psychologist has to say about the minds and motives of a criminal/murderer.

ReplyDeleteWhile I am not exactly sure on what I'd like to research this semester, I think I'd be interested in researching something to do with feminism and media. Feminism and feminism within media are both topics that are very important to me and I do think I'd enjoy researching this. I would start by researching the different methods of using media to critique feminism. The Bechdel test is one example of this. Another is the idea that any comments on an article online about feminism exemplify why we need feminism. I would narrow down my research question by specifying the type of feminism (Intersectional feminism) and then show research for several types of media such as: books, magazines, newspapers, television, movies, video games, music, cell phones, various kinds of software, and the Internet. I would also like to talk about the various feminist media outlets that exist. I'm also interested in possibly writing about how non-straight women and feminism both get treated by the media. I'm not sure how to phrase my exact research question yet.

ReplyDeleteI am thinking about doing my research topic on police brutality since it has recently effected many lives across the United States. I would start by researching different cases that apply to this topic. Most people ask the question why? Why have there been so much police brutality recently. I will go in depth to try to find some answers to this problem. I would talk about things like racism, and also try to find any similarities in all the different cases so that maybe we can find some answers that way. I would also research the different perspectives in each case when it come to the police and the witnesses. This is something that I have been very interested in researching because I want to understand why this has been happening so much. I will show research from different types of media such as: Television, Newspapers, Internet articles, and anything else that corresponds to this topic.
I am planning on doing my research topic abut the effects of animal assisted therapy (AAT) on mental health. But I was curious as to whether or not AAT had a greater or lesser effect on those of different ages. Would elders, adults, or adolescents be impacted more, less, or equally? I will look into mental disorders and illnesses such as dementia, autism, emotional disorders, social ability, stress management, and PTSD. But alongside emotional and behavioral effects are the biological effects. Does AAT effect the actual functions of the brain? People who have been treated with chemotherapy are also impacted by mental distress, so therefore could also be included in this study. Would AAT effect chemo patients any differently than those with diagnosed mental disorders/illnesses? I could retrieve information from experts in AAT and even those who have been personally impacted by the effects of AAT.
ReplyDeleteFor my research I plan on writing about gun control in the united states. I would like to know : what are the pros and cons about gun control? What are some of the proposed ideas of gun control? What are the effects of gun control on citizens and criminals? I will conduct my research by looking at different statistics of different states such as murder rate, crime rate, crimes committed with guns, etc. I will also research how gun control affects people and take a look at the perspectives of those for and against gun control. Gun control is a discussion I have always been interested in and I am interested on peoples' views on it.
ReplyDeleteFor my research paper I will be researching the effectiveness or torture as a means of intelligence extraction. Can it prevent catastrophes? Can it turn the tides of war? Is It just an ineffective strategy implementing the inhumane treatment of human beings? Or can it be altered into a more effective strategy? I will answer these questions by exploring the publishing's of military officials and torture experts while researching conducted studies on the proven effectiveness of torture to determine whether or not torture is really a viable option in times of need.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am not sure what I should write about for this paper, I do have one topic that stands out the most to me, only because I have a personal connection with it. Working Mothers. A few questions that I will ask in this paper are: What differences, if any, are there in children who are raised by stay-at-home moms and working moms? Does society today still discriminate against working mothers who wish to have flexible work schedules? I am drawn to this topic because I am currently a full time employee and as well a mother to a 2 year old little girl. I ask these questions on a daily bases and think that there is solid evidence to support Working and Single Mothers.

ReplyDeleteFor my research paper I plan on writing about the use of performance enhancing drugs in athletes. I want to know what classifies something as a performance enhancing drug? What the long term effects of these drugs are? Why some supplements are illegal for certain sports and not others? As well as, what negative effects the use of these performance enhancing drugs has on athletes lives. I will find the answers to these questions by watching documentories and interviews about performance enhancing drugs, and reading articles about them. I have always found the use of these drugs interesting, and I am excited to find out more about this topic.
ReplyDeleteFor my research paper i will be discussing, how professional athletes go under financial stress or bankruptcy after retirement. How can we prevent young and old athletes going bankrupt? Is it worth being a pro athlete? Why aren't finance classes require in college & high school? I will explain these questions in my research by looking at the just the spending of pro athletes also the financial responsibility of our beloved athletes. One suggestion i will give our 5 major sport leagues MLS (soccer) , NBA (Basketball) , NFL (Football), NHL (Hockey) , MLB (Baseball); is that too have a rookie maximum contract so that rookies coming in the leagues will not get paid like the vets and will learn how to manage the little money the leagues requires team to give them.

ReplyDeleteA subject that fascinate's me is how nurses are viewed in the medical community. I am going to write about how the physical and mental demands for nurses are viewed as weak compared to the other medical professionals around them. Why are doctors given more credit than nurses? How do nurses duties compare to a doctors and why does that effect the way they are looked at? How is a nurse different than a doctor? I will further explain my questions and come of with a conclusion of how nurses should be looked at as equals compared to other medical professionals and taken seriously. I can conduct my own study by asking nurses I know personally about their profession and how they view their job in comparison with those around them.
ReplyDeleteFor my research paper I will be looking into and discussing the influences of creativity in public schools. Are schools discouraging creativity through their teaching and their assignments? How are the students being effected long term due to their lack of being able to think for themselves? I will need to watch videos and do research on this topic and find more talking points for discussion. I will also need to find counter arguments for my topic in order to not come off as bias. I will also conduct my own research and come up with more talking points based off of that. I have always felt that the public school systems are not well preparing their students for the future and I am excited to find out more about this topic.
ReplyDeleteA subject that interests me is gun control and the variables that are involved with enhancing or reducing regulation. I will be writing about how certain laws are excessive. Why the restriction differentiates between rifles and handguns. Why guns are regulated even greater after a mess shooting rather than improving the requirements to own one. As a firearms owner I will be answering these questions and providing studies to help further evaluate these questions.

ReplyDeleteMy subject is about gender dysphoria. Im interested in the people that identify themselves different from what they really are. Who do people feel this way? Were they actually born this way? I want to know who was the youngest and oldest person to find out they were transgender. I feel the transgender movement is strong now because of Bruce Jenner and other known names. More people are open about their gender and sexuality . Does support from family and friends effect the situation? I will do my research online, magazines and other research papers . Then will discus how i feel about this. I truly want to understand more and learn from it.
