This blog calls you to think critically about some gaps you have
noticed in the literature you have read thus far. If you think back to
the student work we have read thus far, a major part of an inquiry based
research project involves locating gaps in the conversation. For
example, in the piece we read about Facebook disclosure, the author
noticed a gap in the literature in recognizing there weren't any
considerations for the Myers Brigs Type Indicator in research involving
social behavior. The researcher noticed that the Five Factor Model was
used exclusively, and she set out to occupy this gap by conducting her
own study to see how the MBTI might add something interesting to help
further understand Facebook disclosure.
At this point, you should be pretty well entrenched in your work, and it
is now time to think critically about what might be missing from the
conversation.
Your task for this blog is to deliver a very concise rendition of the
research conversation, and then indicate some gaps in the current
conversation. I'm sure there is a different angle you can look into that
has yet to be explored. Think of this blog posting as a prequel to your
literature review.
My research paper's focus is on the negative effect of media on body image. I also included sources that talked about the beneficial tool of media literacy to help curb body dissatisfaction due to media images. Some gaps that I have noticed would be the lack of ethnic diversity in this research. Maybe different images of how an African American female should look like can affect the way an African American girl can look at herself. Also different socioeconomic backgrounds haven't really been studied to see if media affects them in some way.In most experiments, the experiment's population is pulled from a University or a secondary school. I also find a gap in those people who maybe feel influenced by the media positively. Maybe they find that the media look is unattainable and that's okay or they feel as though they look similar to a model they see in the media and that boosts their confidence.
ReplyDeleteIn my paper i'm researching financial stress that professional athletes go through after retirement. I will be finding themes that lead into this situation. In my research i found a gap. This gap is that none of the experts or writers talk about what the leagues are doing to help these athletes prepare or help with their bankruptcy. In all the research i did they explain the situation or what happen. They never talk about if colleges are preparing our young athletes or if the leagues are helping athletes retire safely and happy. If they can discuss what are institutions and are high price leagues can do to help this situations.
ReplyDeleteIn my research about loyalty between fictional freindships verses nonfictional. I have come across some quistions that i ask myself while writing my paper. For instances one of the quistions i was think about was " Do freindships have a greater bond if they are the same sex?" And "How long does it take for a freind to become a loyal freind" I have found that most freindships in fictional novels are of same-sex. And in nonfictioctional the author mostly talks about a bond between a loved one.
ReplyDeleteMy research paper will be on how creativity in students is being effected in public schools. While looking into my topic I have found that there are certain questions that are yet to be answered in my field of research. Questions such as why school systems today do not value and teach creativity or creative thinking. In my opinion everyone is born being creative, this is why young children always tend to ask “why” upon a statement. I have noticed in a high school classroom that many student do not ask why when a teacher makes a statement. Is it because they have lost the ability to wonder or question things that are told to be true? Or is it that they are just too tired to even raise their hand? I want to conduct research on these gaps to find the answers.
ReplyDeleteMy research paper is on the mentality of athletes deciding to use performance enhancers. I have been reading articles about the most common reasons of why athletes begin using them, but I have found a major gap with this. No articles tell about the less common factors such as the athletes home life. This is where I will try to really focus my paper on. All of those less common factors that people so commonly neglect. Another gap I have recognized is the lack of variation in the gender that the author has researched. I have not found a single paper that looks at female athletes mental reasons for using performance enhancers, the only people they look at is men. I plan on conducting experiments that will target female athletes as well as male athletes, and look at less common factors, along with the common factors, to get a total and complete image off the mentality of athletes as a whole.
ReplyDeleteMy research paper is on Female serial killers VS. Male serial killers. Basically how male serial killers differ from female killers in our society. Not only the difference but also what motivates a female to kill & what motivates a male to kill. We hear a lot of rap on male killers more than we do on female killers. I am conducting research on figuring out why the female killers are well ignored but when it comes to a male killer it shows up everywhere. There is a gap in this research which would be why we ignore female killers and not publicity blow them up for the awful action that they had committed. Also why do men get the wrap harder than female killers.
ReplyDeleteMy research paper is about how arguments about gun control are being made, more specifically what the grounds or basis for these arguments are. Gun control is a very heated topic in America and almost everybody has an opinion on it. One problem is, or a gap, is that many arguments are not based off anything and are totally arbitrary. My job is to explore these arguments and find out what how and why these arguments for or against gun control are made and observe how they have changed over time.
ReplyDeleteMy research paper I have noticed the papers I been getting for research don't all have the same problem just options on the topic at hand. the topic I have is what are cars sales men not telling you about when you go get your new car more persificaly hybrids and what are they really doing to the world around us. im making this on facts about these cars and what the normal buyer may not know and what they need to learn.
ReplyDeleteMy paper is about how nurses are treated compared to other health professions such as doctors, surgeons, and nurse practitioners. Nursing is a very hot topic right now since more people are starting to realize just how much a nurse really does in the hospital. Since I will be touching on gender equality as well in my paper a gap that I found in past research papers is how a female nurse is treated in the work environment. I will be interviewing nurses to answer how they are treated and how they feel in comparison to their professional peers.
ReplyDeleteMy research project is seeing what builds a successful team what traits do they need to become so successful in their are. When doing this project i found several journals and articles on relative topics but really not a lot breaking down what makes these champion teams be so successful. I have found several journals that record stats and interviews of some players on past championship basketball and baseball teams analyze their team as a core group. After I analyze all of this information and future information i will gather from my independent research i will perform i will have to find a solid argument to back up what i believe makes a successful team function.
ReplyDeleteMy paper is on the advertising effects of pro gun lobbyists towards pro gun control enthusiast and ordinary citizens who are neutral with the matter. Gun control in the U.S. is growing increasingly more strict each year due to the recent rise in fatal mass shootings across the nation. A gap in the information I have gathered is the effects advertisements put across by pro gun control have on the general population.

ReplyDeleteMy research paper is about the contributing factors that lead to police brutality. While doing my research for this project, I've noticed that a lot of the articles I've read and the resources I gathered talked about the same thing. A gap that I found was that the articles always spoke about the negative stuff that came along with police brutality, and never once spoke about the different types of groups that are trying to stop police brutality from occurring. I will incorporate this gap into my research so that way people can also know that there are groups forming around the world to reduce police brutality from happening.
My research paper is about animal assisted therapy and the effects it has on mental health. When reading through various articles, most of them tended to talk more about how it was used primarily in rehabilitation and medical facilities, but fail to mention whether or not these facilities tended to be more urban or rural. This makes an impact in whether or not more concentrated or dispersed environments effect those within a denser population or not. I can use this to determine whether or not being surounded by people has an effect on mental states or if not being around as many people has a greater effect.

ReplyDeleteFor my research paper I am studying how the media causes the development of eating disorders. There is a lot of evidence that confirms that the media does play a role in the development of eating disorders but throughout my research while looking at different sourced I found that many have stated that people who develop eating disorders are usually already prone to it. This means that even before the media plays a significant role in the life of a young girl that girl could possibly already have feelings of negativity with their body. Since eating disorders are mental issues there has to be some base line problems mentally before the media triggers the disorder. The media is labeled as a trigger which sparks the start of a eating disorder. However, there is not much evidence on the fact that there are problems before the development of eating disorders. This makes this a gap in the argument of the media causing eating disorders.

My research paper is about anti-feminist messages in popular science fiction television shows. There is a lot of research about how media is filled with anti-feminist messages and how women are affected by it. As i researched I noticed that there is something missing from the conversation. What about how men are affected by these anti-feminist messages? I hope to find out how both men and women are affected through my own primary research.
